Now this was certainly an adventure! The Suwanee River itself is navigable, but there are such strong currents swirling across the entry that it silts up quickly and there is only a couple of feet of water at high tide. This means if you get there early, you circle around out in deeper water or just go out and anchor. What a shame! This is a beautiful place and is worthy of a visit. Most people won't attempt the entry because they have heard it is 'too shallow'. We anchored out for an hour waiting until high tide. Dennis decided to have a swim - we were about 3 miles out from land and neither of us had counted on the very strong current (the anchor rode was straight out, duh!) He dove off the back of the boat and came up about 50' behind! Getting further away every second! Dennis is a strong swimmer and started back, but it took him almost 10 minutes to make the stern of the boat. I was ready to start the engine and pull anchor and go get him, but that wasn't necessary. When he got back on the boat and we all calmed down he started laughing and said "I would have made it back a lot sooner if my swim suit hadn't decided to fall down - I had to use my legs to hold onto the suit and swim with only my arms". Very funny now! Some lessons are harder than others! We'll always be aware of the current in future swimming excursions. Glad it was a calm day with no seas to speak of! We had no trouble getting in although we went very slowly and followed someone in a motor boat. We saw water as shallow as 3', but it might have been that we had strayed out of the channel. It is well marked, by the way. |
